Printer or WiFi Not Working? Simple Checks Before You Call for Help

Printers and WiFi can be frustrating because the problem is not always obvious. Before you spend money or replace equipment, try these simple checks.

1. Restart in the right order

For internet problems, unplug the modem and router, wait about one minute, plug the modem in first, wait for it to fully reconnect, then plug the router back in.

2. Check which WiFi network you are using

Many homes have more than one network name. Make sure your phone, computer, printer, or TV is connected to the correct home WiFi network and not a guest network or old router.

3. Move closer to the router

If WiFi works near the router but not in another room, the issue may be coverage or dead zones, not the internet service itself.

4. For printers, check the basics first

Make sure the printer has paper, ink or toner, no stuck jobs, and is connected to the same WiFi network as the computer or phone trying to print.

5. Avoid buying new equipment too quickly

A slow connection or printer issue can often be solved with setup changes. Get the problem diagnosed before buying a new router, printer, or service plan.

6. Check where the equipment sits in the home

Routers hidden in cabinets, printers far from the router, thick walls, and crowded apartment WiFi can all cause problems. Sometimes the best fix is placement, not a new device.

7. Write down the network name before changing anything

Before resetting a router or printer, note the WiFi name, password location, internet provider equipment, and which devices are currently working. This makes troubleshooting safer and avoids disconnecting everything at once.
